Q:  Can a person on an H-4 visa work in the United States?

A:  No.

Q:  I am an H-1B visa holder and my mother is dependent on me.  Can I bring her to the United States on an H-4 visa?

A:  No.  You may only get H-4 visas for your spouse and your children under the age of 21.

Q:  I am on an H-4 visa and have been accepted into college.  Can I study on my H-4 visa?

A:  Yes, you may study on the H-4 visa until you turn the age of 21.  You will need to apply for an F-1 visa if you want to be able to work part-time.

Q:  I am currently in F-1 student status, but I am about to marry an H-1B visa holder.  Do I have to change my status from F-1 to H-4?

A:  No, you are not required to change status from F-1 to H-4.

Q:  My father has a valid H-1B visa, and I have an H-4 visa.  I am about to turn 21, can I stay in the U.S.?

A.  Your H-4 visa will automatically expire when you turn 21.  You should plan accordingly and pursue an F-1 visa or other immigration benefit you may be entitled to.  You should consult with an immigration attorney at least one year before you turn 21 if you wish to remain in the U.S.
